Ken Smith

Ken Smith has over 30 years’ experience directing forest restoration and soils-oriented research and management projects in ecosystems across the United States (Tennessee, Florida, New Mexico, Georgia) as well as in Quebec, Canada, the Brazilian Amazon, and in Guinea, West Africa. Most of these field and laboratory research projects had direct implications for improving land management practices. During this time period, Ken has published numerous peer-reviewed papers with faculty colleagues from multiple universities inside and outside of the United States, and he has advised over 50 undergraduate student independent research projects. In addition to leading research activities, Ken has gained experience in administration and management through service as a leader of an academic department, as an assistant dean, and as a member of the board of directors for several organizations including the Valles Caldera National Preserve, the Sewanee Utility District, and the Forest Stewards Guild.  Of note, he was appointed to the Valles Caldera National Preserve managerial board by President Barack Obama. Finally, Ken has worked closely with federal, state, tribal, and private landowners on a variety of forest restoration projects in the eastern and western United States, and he is a certified prescribed fire manager as well.
