Growing up in semi-rural India, Dr. Debankur Sanyal developed an early curiosity about soils and the environments that sustain agricultural communities. After receiving his bachelor's degree in agriculture with a University Merit Scholarship, he was awarded a national fellowship to pursue a master's degree in Soil Science as a Junior Research Fellow at Punjab Agricultural University. Driven by a lifelong ambition to advance soil science research, Dr. Sanyal joined North Dakota State University in 2016 to pursue his doctoral degree in Soil Science. Following six years of doctoral and postdoctoral experience across the Midwest, he joined the Department of Environmental Science at the University of Arizona in January 2022 as Assistant Professor and Statewide Soil Health Extension Specialist, based at the Maricopa Agricultural Center.

Research-backed Soil Health Extension Program (Healthy Desert Soils Initiative)

A soil biogeochemist by training, Dr. Sanyal leads the Healthy Desert Soils Initiative (HDSI), the University of Arizona's first integrated soil health research and extension program built specifically for irrigated arid and semi-arid agroecosystems. Recognizing that existing soil health frameworks were developed for cooler, wetter climates and do not translate to desert conditions, Dr. Sanyal built HDSI to generate original scientific knowledge and deliver practical, desert-adapted solutions directly to Arizona's agricultural community. His program spans multiple commodities, including cotton, leafy vegetables, alfalfa, pecans, vineyards, and rangelands, with active producer collaborations across 14 of Arizona's 15 counties and neighboring states. Through field demonstrations, workshops, statewide soil health surveys, and direct farm visits, Dr. Sanyal works alongside producers, land managers, and agricultural professionals to build healthier soils, improve productivity, and strengthen the long-term resilience of desert farming systems.

Work Experience

  • Postdoctoral Research Associate (2018-2022) at South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD, USA

Degrees

  • PhD (2018) in Soil Science from North Dakota State University, Fargo, ND, USA
  • MS (2015) in Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Punjab, India
  • BS (2013) in Agriculture from Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswa Vidyalaya, Mohanpur, India

Research Interests

Dr. Sanyal's research focuses on soil health assessment and management in arid and semi-arid agroecosystems, soil biogeochemistry, cover cropping and soil amendments, soil microbiology and biofertilizers, nitrogen cycling, and the application of AI-ML and hyperspectral imaging technologies for precision soil health monitoring. His work bridges fundamental science and applied extension, generating desert-specific solutions for producers across the southwestern United States and beyond.
